The flowering Japanese magnolias (sometime call the saucer or tulip magnolias) are exceptionally beautiful early spring blooming trees that produce tulip-shaped flowers before the arrival of the leaves. The Black Tulip magnolia sports 5-6 inch deep rosy/lavender flowers that begin to open in early to mid March. Medium green leaves appear after flowering on this multi-trunked small tree.

Plant Black Tulip magnolia in full sun in amended and well-drained soil. Fertilize each spring after flowering with an organic and/or slow release fertilizer. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.

Good companion plants include forsythia, loropetalum, redbud tree, creeping phlox, early season bulbs and cool season annuals.

*Please note that late frosts can sometimes damage the flowers but rarely harm the tree itself.
