Product Profile: Pennington's Fast Acting Lime

This product would epitomize the statement of "better living through chemistry."

Simply put, pH is a measurement of the acidity or alkalinity of soil, water, etc. It's measured on a logarithmic scale of 1-14. A pH of 1-6 is acidic, 7 is neutral and 8-14 is alkaline (or basic). Most soils in Georgia are moderately to extremely acidic with pH measurements of 4.5 to 6 being common.

The majority of plants prefer to grow in soil that has a pH of 6-6.5, including most turf grasses. To raise the pH of a soil that is too acidic, we apply lime. In the past, common dolomitic lime products usually required an application of somewhere between 40-50 pounds per 1000 square feet in order to achieve a modest rise in the pH. This also took a bit of time. However, with Pennington's Fast Acting Lime, the application rates have dropped dramatically to where applications of 6-8 pounds per 1000 square feet are often sufficient. The change in pH is also much more rapid.

To be sure that your landscape receives the proper amount of lime, we strongly recommend that you have your soil tested. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service offers soil testing for usually less than 10 dollars.
